Last Minute Holiday!

Hi Friends:

With Christmas just around the corner, we thought you could use a little last minute inspiration. From decorating to entertaining, here are some quick and simple ideas to put the finishing touches on your holiday. If you are on top of things and ready to go, save these ideas for next year!

Many of us exchange ornaments or use them to decorate packages. These snowflake ornaments were made by cutting out circle motifs from an old crochet tablecloth. Just dip in fabric stiffener and let dry. Lace tablecloths work well, too; look for them at thrift stores.

We are in love with bottle brush trees! How about this Christmas tree farm displayed on a vintage silver tray!

Yup, we're obsessed! Who can resist a vintage toy car with a bottle brush tree tied to the top?

Tuck a mini poinsettia into a sugar bowl for a little holiday cheer.

Do you have more people coming for dinner than your tableware can accommodate? No problem, mix and match; it will look modern and interesting at the same time. After all, no one dresses from head to toe in one brand, right?

Giving a gift card? Here's a great way to present it. Buy a chocolate bar and wrap it with a printed snowman image. Using bits of fleece, add a hat and scarf. Tuck the gift card under the wrapper and voila!

For sipping hot cocoa or filling with candies, we love these snowman cups for the little ones from Blue Cricket Design. All you need are styrofoam cups with lids, orange felt and paint!

White Ironstone!

Hi Friends:

While walking through snow this morning contemplating what to write about, I found myself once again appreciating "white." It's clean and exudes a sense of peace, calm and comfort. It's neutral - a blank canvas - offering center stage to other elements. This is exactly what I like about white ironstone.

Ironstone china, harder than earthenware and stronger than porcelain, was developed in Staffordshire, England in the early 1800's. Most often decorated with transfer patterns, it was an inexpensive and practical alternative to china. By the mid 1800's, undecorated pieces made it to America when English potters realized that plain, durable china was preferred here. White ironstone marketed to farmers became known as thrashers' ware. These pieces were often embossed with corn, wheat or prairie flowers to appeal to this community.

White ironstone is a popular collectible today, especially if you are a vintage lover. It can be used safely as there are no harmful chemicals in the glaze or china itself and it's so utilitarian! Take a look at these examples of white ironstone:

Decorating with Florals!

Hi Friends:

Decorating with florals goes all the way back to the Renaissance. Flowers appeared in the woven tapestries and paintings found in the homes of the wealthy. But it was during the Victorian Age, when art, music and literature flourished, that interest in florals "bloomed!" Elaborate gardening and floral arrangements abounded. Everything was a canvas for floral motifs especially walls, fabrics and china. I would have fit right into that scene. There's something timeless and cozy about decorating with florals. Faded vintage designs really speak to me. Take a look at a few inspiring ways to incorporate floral items into your decor.
